The Pre Log

Journaling. Why is it important to keep a diary, log or journal? Journaling is the best way to monitor your progress toward achieving your goals. What takes very little effort to do can have a profound effect on your progress and results? Steve started journaling in high school. His journals were nothing fancy. They consisted of date books, steno books, or diaries. His entries were basic. Just the necessary information. I’ve included some pages of Steve’s journals so you can see what a world class athlete did to arrive at world class status.

I wanted to create a journal that would not only be a useful tool for any runner but create something that would allow me to educate people interested in knowing more truths about Steve Prefontaine, my brother. There has been much written and said about Steve over the years. Some of it factual and some fictional stories made up by people who did not know him but rather passed judgment based on rumor or a misquote in the paper. In THE PRE LOG, I have included quotes and stories from people who knew Steve. People who spends hours, days, weeks and years being competitors, friends and coaches.

People are always asking me, “How did Steve get so good?” My answer has always been this; there isn’t one thing that made Steve so good. It was many things. It was growing up in a tough town in a tough environment, family dynamics and of course genetics. It was being lucky to have good coaching by people who wanted to see Steve succeed at the right time and place. When you encounter hills in your everyday living and turn those hills into everyday challenging workouts, that increases your strength and your stamina. Steve did that everyday, rain or shine. I’ve included pictures of the terrain and places where Steve and his teammates worked out.

To those who aspire to become better runners or great runners, follow in the footsteps of those before you who set the standards. Learn from those who achieved greatness. Learn from Steve Prefontaine and what it took for him to achieve success. Start journaling your way to better running.
